Dressage opens onto a story of obedience and rebellion: a spectacle shimmying out of the reins of stricture and subjugation, in search of a more substantive point of connection with the human animal. Decidedly out to re-wild the body, the will of this new work is to electrify the exchange between the feral and the bridled. Clarity and line set the precedent for fiercely technical contemporary dance while contact and improvisation raise the bar for virtuosity and adventure. Blind Tiger Society’s signature aesthetic is visible in the rigor of the movement, tenacity of the composition and in the indulgent and sensuous physicality.
Blind Tiger Society originally presented Dressage as part of Ring Sour, a shared evening of work with Chicago-based company Khecari through the MidWest Nexus Touring Initiative. Through Links Hall in Chicago, IL, the Midwest Nexus Touring Initiative provides an opportunity for Chicago-based artists to develop relationships with national artists, institutions, organizations and presenters. The program offers direct financial support, tour preparation workshops, and performance space so artists can share their work beyond Chicago. Midwest Nexus Artists, Khecari partnered with Blind Tiger Society to create Ring Sour which was presented for one weekend at Links Hall in December 2015 and in the home city of Blind Tiger Society through CounterPulse’s Co-Production Season.
